Runes Ednah Walters Books

This novel proved to be another of those "I am so attracted to this shady man for no particular reason, and he sends hot tingles down my spine and I can't stop thinking about him even though I barely know him" things. And why is it that these people with godly powers hang out in high schools? Frankly, I'm sick of the this type of plot and quickly became sick of the book.

I felt like the author was beating me over the head with the fact that Raine's new neighbor, Torin, is supremely hot and she gets "delicious sensations" up her spine and her stomach flips every time she sees him. The author tells more than shows, which makes for a rather boring and bland story. I don't think there was a page after chapter 2 where Raine wasn't being kissed by Eirik or thinking naughty things about Torin and scolding herself for it.

Overall, a tired plot and uninteresting characters.

Runes Ednah Walters Books Reviews

This was good for a few chapters. I loved the concepts and the lore the magic was based on. The characters were realistic to their age and their reactions fit. However, it went from good to shady pretty quickly. The main character went from trying to get her long-time crush to kiss her to fighting an overwhelms desire for her new neighbor. Even after she starts dating her crush, she dwells on her interest in the new boy and ends up making out with him on her date with her boyfriend! I could have gotten over that but the story went from developing "normally" if a little shaky to everything being dumped at the end. A romance was introduced for the main characters boyfriend to excuse her cheating on him Twists that were barely hinted at were jarringly introduced, conclusion seemed forced and was not satisfying in any way.
Raine Cooper is a typical teenager. She is on the swim team and she has her two best friends, Cora and Eirik. She’s coping with some stuff (I won’t go into because I don’t want to give much away). Other than that, her life is pretty normal. She’s waiting for Eirik to finally ask her out so they can move beyond friendship.

Enter Torin St. James. Torin moves in next door – into the house her friend Eirik used to live in. He’s hot, arrogant, a bad ass with a faint English accent and riding a motorcycle. Yes, please! He’s kind of rude to Raine when they first meet but she holds her own very well against him. The banter between them was great.

I don’t really care for love triangles but this one wasn’t like the triangles you see in a lot of YA books. Raine loves Eirik, but as a best friend. She’s confused at first about what kind of love she feels for him, but it’s obvious from the moment Torin calls her Freckles, where the real chemistry is. I loved Eirik but Torin is one of those characters who when he isn’t in the scene, you can’t help but wonder when he’s going to show up again. I love it when an author creates a character who draws you in that way.

Stuff happens (see how I avoided the spoilers?) and Torin saves Raine’s life. Suddenly she can see weird symbols everywhere and she doesn’t know what is happening to her. A whole new world opens to Raine, one she thought existed only in myth, and her life is changed forever. Walters does an amazing job of weaving Norse mythology into the story as well as developing a great relationship between Raine and Torin. The books doesn’t end on a cliffhanger, but you’ll be so invested in wanting to find out what happens next, you’ll be reaching for the next one immediately.
Why do I subject myself to these Young Adult Fantasy novels, WHY?

Well, because some are truly good, some actually are great. This book? Not so. Too much teenage angst.

It goes from "Oh, I'm so upset he's looking at that girl, that skank." to "Oh I love him with all my soul." Yeah, right, until the next hot, and handsome stud comes your way. Or until he appears with some other girl, then it's "Oh how could he? That skank isn't fit to kiss his big toe." But then he touched her, and now it's "Oh, I quiver at his touch, my knees collapsing as he brushes his hand on the back of my neck."

Is this real life? Or is it make believe. Hey, isn't that the name of a song?

Needless to say, this book was far into the teenage angst bit. Way to far for my tastes, but I kept reading, hoping we'd get into some really heroic fantasy. Sure the author indicated things would get better, but then teenage angst would reappear and take over a couple of chapters. And I kept torturing myself. Page after page of teenage angst, then teenage lust, then back to the angst. Ugh, ugh, too much to handle, way too much. Arrrrghhh.

Do I recommend this novel? If you like, or love teenage angst, go for it. If you're looking for a well written Fantasy novel dedicated to young adults, look elsewhere; they do show up on .
