Jess Schira does a great job painting the picture of a quiet farm and the story of Oliver and Madelyn. This is a warm read and perfect for a rainy day cheerup.
Sweet romance! Definitely takes you back to a more innocent time. Schira does an excellent job in allowing the reader to visualize every piece of the story. A must read! ~Neva Squires-Rodriguez Author of Liliana Series
This is a delightfully charming little country tale, and the fact I’m a bee-keeper’s moll, I naturally loved the storyline.
Set within the Georgian era and of Queen Charlotte’s love for hosting grand balls and social functions, beeswax candles were required in vast numbers from specialist suppliers. In those days beeswax candles were almost akin to gold-plated illumination in comparison to that of tallow candles. And so, when Oliver Hamilton, the Queen’s acquisitions officer, encounters Madelyn Wickham, disaster unsuspectingly lies in wait around the corner. But who wishes to harm her, and seeks to destroy all that she has? Albeit Oliver’s job is merely to acquire candles, a true gallant cannot abandon a young woman to the vagaries of harsh weather and destitution. Thus, as he and Madelyn work together to resolve her plight, a new kind of light sparks between them. Oh yes, it’s a sweet little romance and the delightful aspect, it has an original plot.
I just want to point out I award five stars for original plot themes, and for stories that touched my heart.
This little story has made me want to read more of Schira's works. This novella is nearly perfectly constructed as far as character and story arc, with romance, danger, hopefulness and heroism appearing in such a tight sweet little tale. There are quite a few editing errors which will distract those readers that are bothered by that, so I don't think it was quite ready for publication. But at the current price of .99 one can look past that in order to become acquainted with a new author. I think the story deserves editing and a rewrite, because of all the good things it does contain.
Like another reviewer stated, I cared enough about the characters to wonder how their lives lived out. I could see them on their future farm, with Madelyn's bees (continued business with the Queen because of Oliver's connection and Madelyn's known skill) and Oliver's cows, and old Jack (who will no doubt be retired to his place beside the door or the fireplace.) I loved it. I read this via Unlimited, but would consider purchasing sometime in the future at a higher than the current .99 after a new editing, it really is charming enough to want to read again.
I really enjoyed this clean and sweet story. Both Oliver and Madelyn are kind and good people. You cannot help but want a happy ending. I am interested in reading more from this author. It was a lovely escape on a wintry evening!
In Snowflakes and Beeswax, Jess Schira spins a lovely story. It feels like half Georgian romance, and half fairy tale. Madelyn Wickham (main character) loses her father early in the story. The story is set in the time when Patriarchal inheritance forced women to be treated like bargaining chips. Madelyn's future is dim. She continues to try and pay her bills by making and selling the beeswax candles her father taught her to make. Then along comes a rider... a buyer for the Queen. At only 20,000 words, Schira manages to work some dark deeds and a local villain into this sweet romance.
There are a few typos. Not enough to distract from the story.
I'm not very fond of novella type reads, since I like some substance in the books I read. Still, I was entertained by this and I'm glad I read it.
Aspects of the story were good but lots of errors and choppy storyline, clean romance, author has potential, just too many grammar mistakes.
